What is copywriting?
Copywriting is the act of writing the text for advertisements or other persuasive public material. The point is to use words that will catch people’s attention and persuade them to initially buy something. And the copy is the written material that motivates consumers to buy something.
That is why copywriting is at a high level of popularity around the world.
It plays a huge role in marketing. Copywriting can make better brand awareness and if it’s done properly, it is amazing how much can affect consumers.
Here we have a billboard from ‘’The Dictionary Hotel’’ in London. So a good copywriter creates a catchy, fun, and interesting headline, so even if you don’t need a hotel room at that moment, you will definitely remember this hotel because of the words the copywriter used.
You’ll probably think of other examples you saw in the past that you still remember today and they are usually from some of the best companies in the world.
Great copywriters use words or phrases that will grab your attention, that will make you want to read and watch and will persuade you into buying the product.
So this is where you probably would ask yourself, but wait, isn’t that the same as content writing?
As it turns out, no.
Here’s the difference between copywriting and content.
Content can also be used to persuade someone into buying something, but it has also a lot to do with educating the audience on a certain topic or increasing brand awareness.
Content marketing is also an excellent way to guide the user through the entire customer journey, with all its stages, in order to educate, inform, and inspire the reader.
Copywriters use a more direct approach to accomplish their goal. Content can help you to better understand the brand and copywriting can help you sell it.
Copywriters create different types of channels for marketing and some of them are:
- Lyrics for Jingles
- Prose/Scripts for Radio and TV commercials
- Social Media Posts
- Sales Letter
- Landing Pages
Another important thing about copywriting is that it never gets old. You may think this is a new or mostly new technique, but it is not. The first-ever full-time copywriter was John Emory Powers and he was born in 1837.
We can bet that he never thought we’d do this on a laptop, as we also today don’t know what the next thing might be.
But, what we do know is that copywriting is necessary. And because of that, copywriting is paid well, for instance in the USA the average salary is around $61.000/year.
A lot of copywriters work as freelancers, but they also work in marketing agencies, PR
companies, copywriting agencies, etc. There is also a similarity with technical writing, but still, it’s not the same thing because, as you saw, for example, copywriting is about writing an advertisement to sell something and technical writing is about explaining how to use what you bought.
These are just the basics, but it’s always good to read and learn more and more.
Remember, great copywriting makes good into great, a word into a phrase, an idea into a direct message. Copywriting is about putting persuasive words out there and making people wanna look and buy.
